If you have recently had your roof installers repair or replace your roof, and you have a lot of old shingles sitting around, you might want to consider some of the following ways in which you can re-purpose them. This way, you are giving some of the shingles a new purpose, and you can then dispose of the rest.

Roof for the Dog House or Tool Shed

When you are building your own dog house or tool shed, or repairing the existing ones, you will need to make sure that you are securing a quality roof. This way, you will not have to worry about your dog or your tools getting soaked from rainwater. You can ask the roof installers to set aside the shingles that they feel are in the best shape. After all, even if all of the existing shingles are being removed from your roof, some of them may still be good enough for small projects. The professional roofers will know which shingles will be the most valuable to you.

Reuse Them for Another House

If you have hired a roofing company to remove all of the shingles on your house because you want to go with a different color or a completely different material, and the existing shingles are still in good shape, you will want to save them. Explain to the roofing contractors that you would like to reuse the shingles on another house, so they will be extra cautious when removing them from the roof. You can then use them on a rental home or your cabin, or sell them to someone who may be in need of inexpensive shingles to do some repairs to their home.

Traction for Tires When There Is Ice

If you have found that it can sometimes be difficult to pull your vehicle out of your driveway when there is ice, you can make use of the old shingles to help. Put a stack of them in your garage or keep some of them in the trunk of your vehicle. If you are having trouble getting enough traction, simply place a few shingles down on the ground, right up against the tires. If you need to pull forward, place the shingles in front of the tires. If you need to go in reverse, place them behind the tires.

As you can see, there are a lot of different things you can do with the old shingles that are taken off of your roof. Therefore, before you let anyone take them away, you will want to see how much use you can get out of them. Just make sure that you are talking with your roofer about your desire to keep the shingles, so they can save as many of them as possible.
